Senior Counselor

Julie Nelson is a Senior Counselor with Strategic Public Affairs®.  She has worked in both the public and private sectors.  This includes extensive experience in the energy, maritime and transportation industries.  She served in the public sector as a senior political appointee under President George W. Bush at the US Department of Transportation.  In the private sector she worked at Cameron LNG as a part of the executive team as the Vice President of Government Relations & Public Affairs.  Prior to Cameron LNG, she was the Head of Government Affairs for the US and Mexico at BG Group (acquired by Shell).

Julie is skilled in creating strategies to mitigate non-technical risks and developing appropriate social and political strategies to improve ROI.   She has expertise in managing license to operate issues, social and political risk, developing and maintaining good relationships with local, state and federal government officials, community outreach and coordinating internal and external communications.  Her knowledge of required environmental and social frameworks for international project financing has applications for both small and large projects within the US and internationally.

Julie holds a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from Indiana University along with a master’s degree in maritime and admiralty law from Tulane University.  She has authored and presented papers at several international conferences focusing on social imperatives for LNG projects and LNG shipping opportunities.  In the US, she has been a featured speaker at natural gas, maritime and transportation conferences.  Her interest in international and maritime issues started during her US Navy enlistment and further civilian service in US Naval Intelligence.

Julie served as a Board or Committee member at America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA), the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA), the Center for LNG, the US Chamber of Shipping and the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) USA.  She was also an Advisory Board member to Constellation Energy’s Public Sector Business Unit.  Julie was formerly a Board Member for the Houston March of Dimes and a member of their award-winning Texas Advocacy Team.  She now volunteers at Dress for Success Houston.

A few of my favorite things:  Slow running, yoga, traveling (especially to the beach), all things Disney and binge watching shows on Netflix!
