Where have all the Liberals Gone?

What happened to all of the liberals?  I mean true liberal thinkers.  I miss them.  And they miss each other.  Recently, I was talking to a friend of mine who was one of those young liberal, radical, activists who marched in the 60s.  He was against big government.  He was against corporatism.  He wanted everyone to just get along.  He did not want anyone telling him what to say, how to say it and how to live.  He believed, and still does for that fact, that people should not condemn others and try to shut them down if they disagreed.  He might not agree with your way of life, your religion, what you did for a living or a hobby.  He and his fellow travelers believed that what set them apart was that they were a live and let live bunch.  You do your thing.  I will do my thing.  Tolerance was a cornerstone of how they thought.  Arthur Marwick wrote about this in his book about this era and the people of the era, The Sixties, Cultural Revolution in Britain, France, Italy, and the United States, c.1958-c.1974.  “It gave us tolerance for new ideas, and brought us a step nearer to equality of rights, removing many prejudices of sexual, racial and moral origin. It gave us the freedom to accept or reject things on their own merits and according to our own individual preferences. I believe that the sixties were a mini-renaissance in which the right of individual expression was encouraged, applauded and nurtured by a generation whose naive belief was that all we needed was love.”

So what happened to that generation that was about freedom, tolerance and individualism and expression?  It has been eaten alive and crushed by the progressive movement which cares nothing about any of these things.  If I were a liberal today I would be repulsed, angered and most of all disappointed that a bunch of progressives posing as liberals had hijacked what I had worked so hard for in the 60s.

Look at what the progressives have done to our culture.  If you don’t agree with them they will not be tolerant.  They will not respect your individual beliefs.  They will do everything they can to shut you up and shut you down.  They will go so far as to crush your ability to make a living.  Examples of this intolerance abound.  The cheerleader from Texas Tech who posted a picture of the lion she shot on safari had her life threatened.  Really, that is tolerance?  I don’t agree with you so I am going to threaten to kill you.  How about the make-up model who was fired because she is a big game hunter?  Her bosses fired her for being a big game hunter.  If I have an employee who is both an animal rights activist and a vegan, do I fire them because I think their beliefs and views are backward or absurd?  No.  I simply disagree with them and move on.  One more example was Phil Robertson being suspended for his comments on gay marriage.  Who came to his rescue?  A well-known gay activist and lesbian Camille Paglia.  During an interview on the Laura Ingraham Show Paglia summarized exactly what I am saying.  “To express yourself in a magazine in an interview – this is the level of punitive PC, utterly fascist, utterly Stalinist, OK, that my liberal colleagues in the Democratic Party and on college campuses have supported and promoted over the last several decades,” she said. “This is the whole legacy of free speech 1960’s that have been lost by my own party.”  Ironically Robertson’s bosses were in the process of showing him the door and they caved.  Those open minded and tolerant progressives caved because they know the Robertson clan brings big bucks to them.  That smacks of corporatism not honest liberalism.

As the famous song says, “Let it be, let it be.”  I might not agree with you or even like you.  But, I am not going to threaten your life, crush your ability to make a living and shut your voice down.  Heck, I sound like a liberal, radical, activist from the 60s.
