“I hate Houston!”  That is what I told my father-in-law 15 years ago not knowing how passionate he was about this city.  I swore I would never live in Houston.  My wife and I were living in Austin at the time.  Neither one of us planned on moving to Houston.  I thought Austin was the end all to be all.  It was the place to live.  But, life in Austin was not meant to be.  We moved from Austin to Houston by choice.  Yes, we were not relocated.  We moved on our own volition.    As we made weekend trips to see my in-law in Houston, the city my wife was born and raised in, they gave me books to read about the rich history of the city.  They showed me the vibrant economy.  They talked about the can do attitude of the people.  They took the time to dispel the myths, lies, half-truths and downright boloney that is repeated by the Houston haters.  Houston is a great city.  Don’t let anyone tell you anything different.

Houston was founded by Augustus and John Allen in August of 1836.  Since then, Houston has grown from an insignificant, sleepy community on the banks of Buffalo Bayou to a power house city that is amazing by any standards.  If you want entertainment we have it.  We have all of the professional stick and ball sports; basketball, baseball, football and soccer.  Yes, we even have racing.  The Indy Racing League hits the streets of Houston this summer.  It’s not NASCAR, but hey, it will have to do.

We are often accused of being a bunch of hicks, backward country folks or cowboys with no class and culture.  Yes we do have the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo.  And it is awesome.  That is a rich part of our culture.  We also have a broad array of performing arts.  We have opera, ballet and a symphony.  I have actually been on trips out of state, even in state, and when I tell people we have all of these, they act surprised.  They must be listening to the Houston haters.  And yes, we have world class museums along with theatre.  If you enjoy live music we have every genre you can imagine; country, reggae, pop, jazz, Texas/Americana, rock, Tejano, blues, hip-hop/wrap, Czech, folk, Caribbean, Zydeco and Celtic.  You name it.  We have it.

Since I am talking about entertainment that is a good segue to food.  When you go out to listen to music, see a show or visit a museum you might combine that with a meal.  Houston is restaurant and food heaven.  Of course we have BBQ.  We are in Texas.  We also have comfort food, fine dining and foodie food restaurants.  We have James Beard Award winning chefs.  We have cuisine from India, Russia, China, Brazil.  Name a country or ethnicity.  We have a restaurant that fulfills almost every taste and desire.  I will put our food scene, for variety and quality, up against any city.  The only one I will recognize as better is New York.  But, hey it is a concrete jungle too.

We have a vibrant economy.  It is driven by energy.  We are the energy capitol.  Oil & gas are a major part of the economy in Houston.  We also have the Port of Houston which is another major economic driver.  We have the greatest healthcare institutions in the world’s largest medical center.  Don’t forget we have a thriving bio tech industry and nano tech, the Bucky Ball, that was something born right here in Houston.

I am an unabashed booster of this great city.  I want to tell everyone who does not live here and those who do, just how awesome this city is.  I am often accused of being on the payroll of the Convention and Visitors Bureau.  But, alas, I am not.  I would welcome the extra client.  So ignore the Houston haters.  Be an ambassador.  Be proud of your great city.  I sure as heck am!
